Over the course of his career, Thompson has earned numerous awards and honors, including the Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, the Orville Gibson Award for guitarists, and a spot in the top 20 of Rolling Stone's 2004 list of all-time guitar greats. In February 2006, he was awarded a BBC Lifetime Achievement Folk Award.

Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy & Mike Waterson - 10th October, 2009

For more than 30 years Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy have been at the forefront of the English folk scene. Joined by the great Mike Waterson, this promises to be a night to remember.
Norma Waterson, is one of the country’s finest, most emotive singers with her wonderfully compassionate voice, and is another BBC Folk Award recipient. Norma has also been awarded the MBE, and was the first folk artist to be nominated for a Mercury Music Prize when she famously very nearly pipped Pulp to first place.
Martin Carthy was awarded the MBE for services to English Music and won Singer of the Year and Best Traditional Track at the BBC Radio 2 Awards, 2005. His work has influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon.
Martin Simpson & Danny Thompson - 4th July, 2009

2008 was a fantastic year for Martin Simpson. He began by playing to a spellbound audience at the Goldmark Gallery. He then released the most successful album of his career, won Best Album, Best Original Track and Best Musician at the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and played on BBC TV's Later with Jools Holland and the Folk Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. 2009 finds him at the height of his powers, being nominated again for Best Musician.
In his 40-plus years as a professional musician, acoustic bass player Danny Thompson has worked with the cream of the music industry, from Roy Orbison and Rod Stewart to Pentangle, Richard Thompson and John Martyn. Widely regarded as a genius by musicians and fans alike, his improvisatory style is utterly distinctive. Recently awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Paspatou are an acoustic band playing an eclectic mix of original world and folk music. Styles include Irish, Eastern European, African, Latin, Klezmer & Arabic. These four multi-instrumentalists have performed at many art centres around the UK and are a staple of the festival scene, delighting audiences at the Glastonbury Festival and headlining the Riverside Festival last year.

Kathryn Tickell & Peter Tickell - 28th February, 2009

We have a very special concert at the gallery at the end of February, Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian pipes, voice and fiddle) and her brother Peter Tickell (fiddle and guitar). They rarely play small venues anymore and so we are quite excited to have been able to book them.
Kathryn Tickell is a composer and performer whose work is deeply connected to the landscape and people of Northumbria. She took up the Northumbrian smallpipes aged nine and by thirteen had won every competition going. Kathryn has recorded many albums, toured extensively throughout the world, presented a series of programmes for Radio 2. She has recorded with the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, The Chieftans, Beth Nielsen-Chapman, Andy Sheppard and many others. She has also contributed to four Sting albums, and performed on BBC's Later with Jools. In September 2001 she performed as part of the Last Night of the Proms celebrations, the first time the event had included traditional folk music and in 2005 she was awarded Musician of the Year at BBC2's Folk Awards. Kathryn (Northumbrian pipes, voice and fiddle) is joined by her brother Peter Tickell (fiddle and guitar) for a very special, intimate evening of music.

Kathryn Tickell is to be awarded the prestigious Queen’s Medal for Music 2009. The annual award, presented to an individual who is judged to have had a major influence on the musical life of the nation, will be formally announced by Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, at a ceremony at The Sage Gateshead on Monday 26th January.

Iain Ballamy & John Parricelli - 10th July, 2008
It will not escape the listener that these two are old friends. Ever since meeting in the legendary Loose Tubes orchestra of the 1980's Ballamy and Parricelli have worked together, touring worldwide as a duo and in larger ensembles and diverse settings including film scores, a fusion quartet (ACME), a trio featuring Norma Winstone MBE (who is without question one of the finest contemporary jazz voices) and most recently an Anglo Swedish Quintet which features Keith Jarrett's legendary Swedish bassist Palle Daniellsen.
They will perform original music as well as little heard works by composers including Kenny Wheeler, Tom Jobim and the Brazilian legend Hermeto Pascoal with whom Ballamy has toured and recorded.
Expect an evening of sophisticated excellence from two truly notable contemporary players.

Saul Rose is rare gem of a musician. He has been playing melodeon for 21 years, has won 2 folk awards and been nominated for a Mercury music prize.
Peter and Martin Cropper - 23rd May, 2008

Peter Cropper is one of the UK’s most influential and innovative musicians. As leader of the internationally renowned Lindsay String Quartet for over 40 years, he has performed at the world’s leading chamber music centres and festivals.
Martin Cropper currently runs an education programme for string players in Sheffield funded by the National Foundation for Youth Music. Martin is Head of Strings at Oakham School in Rutland and also Head of Strings for the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra.
John Renbourn & Robin Williamson - 20th April, 2008

Two luminary folk legends combine for a superb evening of music and storytelling.
John Renbourn, a founding member of 60’s band Pentangle, takes the listener into a rich musical landscape of warm vocals and witty asides about the history of the songs. At the core is a revolutionary guitar style that explores the instrument's potential in unusual and beautiful ways, created and performed by a consummate master.
Though best renowned as a founding member of The Incredible String Band, it's hard to think of anyone else on the contemporary music scene who can demonstrate such a dizzying range of accomplishments as Robin Williamson. Robin is a songwriter of undisputed stature, a distinctive interpreter of traditional song, a published poet and novelist and author of instructional works for the fiddle and penny whistle, a leading light in the recent revival of storytelling.
