Sometimes the fragility of items appearing on our shores defies belief. The elements can be unforgiving. Storms; ferocious, howling gales, crashing seas, destructive rocks. One can feel very vulnerable experiencing such conditions. How then, do tiny particles of wood such as this birds body, survive intact? (And why do I feel so protective of this treasure when I rescue it? Why, 'tis my raison d'etre of course.)

The ungainly head. Is that a type of pelican? A globule of green plastic, it's vulgarity sea-worn till it resembles a semi-precious stone.......or a "raft".

We are aware that animals have, unbeknownst to them, travelled vast distances and re-colonised elsewhere.

" All at sea" one day. Perfectly at home the next.
Sid Burnard portraitSid Burnard was born in Brighton in 1948. Introduced to the art of beachcombing by his Romany grandmother, Sid learnt to appreciate the beauty of nature from an early age. His time at Bristol Guild of Applied Arts gave him a profound understanding of visual arts and crafts and allowed him to put his personal vision into practice.

He is now based in Borth near Aberystwyth in Wales, where the flotsam and jetsam from the nearby sea is his only source of materials. Working with found objects, nothing is changed - simply introduced to one another. His driftwood pieces, usually birds, boats or mythical beasts, are full of his passion, integrity and wonderful humour.
