Camped near Cape Cornwall one summer holdiay, discovering fresh shores and visiting known ones, we returned to Newlyn where a bleached skate skull once lay in wait, like some science-fiction creation (it adorns my studio wall, alongside other bare-boned crew). Surprise surprise! Close to that same site a large rusty metal bracket, three-dimensional, wide-eyed, gaping-jawed, stared up from glistening incoming tide-washed pebbles and cried out ‘Aztec Bird-God.’
The large blue plastic plume that adorns his head was originally part of an industrial brush. Set on a sturdy V shaped log that washed up at Borth, the Bird-God was hatched. Arrogant and thunderous, it has a definite ‘hieroglyphic’ character...

Sid Burnard was born in Brighton in 1948. Introduced to the art of beachcombing by his Romany grandmother, Sid learnt to appreciate the beauty of nature from an early age. His time at Bristol Guild of Applied Arts gave him a profound understanding of visual arts and crafts and allowed him to put his personal vision into practice.
He is now based in Borth near Aberystwyth in Wales, where the flotsam and jetsam from the nearby sea is his only source of materials. Working with found objects, nothing is changed - simply introduced to one another. His driftwood pieces, usually birds, boats or mythical beasts, are full of his passion, integrity and wonderful humour.
