The Callanish Stones are an arrangement of standing stones placed in a cruciform pattern with a central stone circle or megalith.
Erected in the late Neolithic era on a low ridge above the waters of Loch Roag with the hills of Great Bernera as a backdrop.
Numerous other ritual sites lie within a few kilometres. These include at least three other circles, several arcs, alignments and single stones.
The most impressive, Callanish II and Callanish III, lie just over a kilometre South East of the main Callanish Stones.
The existence of other monuments in the area implies that Callanish was an active focus for prehistoric religious activity for at least 1500 years.

David Suff is a painter and printmaker, notably of garden landscapes using a meticulous, Pointillist-style technique and a rich palette. He was born in Exeter in 1955 and studied at the University of Leeds Department of Fine Art from 1973-7 and the Royal College of Art from 1978-81. He gained the Anstruther Award for drawing in 1980 and the Pimm’s Award for Drawing and Watercolour in 1987.
Suff’s work is almost always based upon observational drawing of the landscape, especially gardens, and is often created on hand-made paper. He has described how there is an important link between the symbol of the garden and spirituality in his work which attempts to illustrate mankind’s constant search for the divine. He has shown in a number of solo shows, in the UK and abroad.
