Betty Swanwick was a painter, illustrator, designer and muralist. She was encouraged to draw from an early age by her father, the marine artist Henry Gerard Swanwick. She painted in watercolour, illustrated her own novels, as well as designing posters for London Transport and an album cover for the band Genesis.
In 1936 Swanwick began teaching at Goldsmiths College, where she was Head of Illustration between 1948 and 1961. She also taught at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools.
