'This work was inspired by René Magritte's two paintings, The Red Model. Magritte's speculation on the identity of objects and imagery is seriously and deeply fascinating. I cast the feet of my son, Hugo. I like to think that Magritte himself might have been amused and intrigued by the idea of Constructions, taken from his paintings, but which also appear to be the subjects he originally painted.' SVW
Simon Vaughan Winter PortraitVaughan-Winter was born in London in 1953. He studied at Stourbridge College of Art, followed by a year at St.Martin’s School of Art, after which he was appointed a lecturer there. Vaughan Winter was also a visiting lecturer at the Chelsea School of Art, Royal College of Art, and Royal Academy Schools. He became Arts Editor for the London Evening news in 1979, undertaking freelance work alongside.

During the ‘90s VaughanWinter concentrated on his two businesses: the first, manufacturing pewter miniatures, the second, an antique emporium. By the end of the decade he decided to work full-time making art and so began his surreal and extraordinary constructions. The work is exquisitely composed, delicate, often disturbing. It can be by turns quirky, intellectually provocative and nostalgic.
