Words are inadequate to describe these creatures. Exquisite colours, amazing flight capability (70 wingbeats per second), awe-inspiring. I can only shake my head in disbelief.
Some colour was required in the composition, so a worn red base, blushing in embarrassed inadequacy. The fineness of the stem needed substantial location, hence the plinth. But what a stem! Can you see the fossilised remains of birds amongst the seams and scars of barnacled wood? In order to share this find, it had to be presented in such a way. The hummingbird’s body is hollow, graciously accepting the pointed beak as a partner. A delicate composition, in contrast to its fellow "Hatch of the day"!

Sid Burnard was born in Brighton in 1948. Introduced to the art of beachcombing by his Romany grandmother, Sid learnt to appreciate the beauty of nature from an early age. His time at Bristol Guild of Applied Arts gave him a profound understanding of visual arts and crafts and allowed him to put his personal vision into practice.
He is now based in Borth near Aberystwyth in Wales, where the flotsam and jetsam from the nearby sea is his only source of materials. Working with found objects, nothing is changed - simply introduced to one another. His driftwood pieces, usually birds, boats or mythical beasts, are full of his passion, integrity and wonderful humour.
