Born in 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA to Czech immigrant parents, Andy Warhol is probably the most famous member of the Pop Art movement. He studied painting and design at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh before settling in New York in 1950. He achieved enormous success as a commercial artist, winning the prestigious Art Directors’ Club Medal twice in 1952 and 1957.
Virtually any image that was in the public domain was a prime target for the Warhol treatment. Sculptures of Brillo soap pad boxes, Coca-Cola bottles and replications of popular icons such as Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor and most famously Marilyn Monroe are just some of his huge body of work. Warhol died in 1987.
