Insects, (that's 70% of all known species on the planet), have been around one thousand times longer than us mere mortals, yet they are in serious dec!ine. What's more, we need 'em, badly. They can look scary. They can inflict an unpleasant sting. But look at their magnified images and be mesmerised.
During Goldmark's filming of "Free Spirit" in 2012, (when Barak Obama briefly interrupted proceedings), several pieces of wire appeared in that cove. Not long afterwards, the colourful top of a drinks container washed up. They dwelt together in my "Sids scrapyard" tray for a few years until I thought it time to represent our insect friends. I had the head and the tail. Lo and behold, an exquisitely marked, partially burnt cone of driftwood, survivor of a beach fire, rested amongst my bird bodies. The three components fell in love, perfectly compatible. 6 legs, spokes from a dumped moped wheel, provided correctly scaled legs.
Watch out folks! My Spring-Sting Hornet has hatched.

Sid Burnard was born in Brighton in 1948. Introduced to the art of beachcombing by his Romany grandmother, Sid learnt to appreciate the beauty of nature from an early age. His time at Bristol Guild of Applied Arts gave him a profound understanding of visual arts and crafts and allowed him to put his personal vision into practice.
He is now based in Borth near Aberystwyth in Wales, where the flotsam and jetsam from the nearby sea is his only source of materials. Working with found objects, nothing is changed - simply introduced to one another. His driftwood pieces, usually birds, boats or mythical beasts, are full of his passion, integrity and wonderful humour.
