Opening on Saturday 28th June, we're delighted to invite you to an exhibition of watercolours, gouaches and oils by Robert Dawson. Light lunch at 1pm. Welcome talk by Mike Goldmark at 2pm.
Goldmark customers will know Dawson’s trademark Welsh and Staffordshire landscapes in oils but this exhibition will be the first chance to see the artist's many drawings which have only just come to light and have never been exhibited before.
The quality and commitment of Dawson’s work is well summed up by his friend Sir Kyffin Williams R.A. who commented in 2000 Bob Dawson was a man of total integrity. He was a large and gentle man who lived with the high standards he set himself while producing work of very great merit. Because he painted what he loved he was able to communicate that love to others.
Old dwellings huddled together within the folds of Welsh and Staffordshire landscapes constitute a recurring motif in the work of Robert Dawson. With the exception of some passing cattle, Dawson appears to depict deserted villages, devoid of life. But don’t be fooled, for this is work that crackles with energy. It is there in the vigorously painted surfaces that possess their own physical intensity. And it is there in the vision of an artist, who through tone and colour, transforms these seemingly lifeless environments into places full of character, often sinister and mysterious.
