Michael Rothenstein was an artist of extraordinary imaginative and technical gifts. He was a draughtsman of great verve and subtlety. Above all, he was a committed and innovative printmaker, whose output over nearly fifty years was characterised by a recurrence of compulsive themes, bravura techniques and visual surprise.
Rothenstein was one of the great artist-printmakers of the twentieth century: his graphic work presents a complex vision matched by a passionately inventive virtuosity. Mel Gooding
