Original limited edition pochoir.

In June 1920 the publisher La Sirène of Paris issued a suite of prints by Raoul Dufy to accompany verses by the great symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé. The suite was entitled Madrigaux and comprised 25 lithographs coloured by the pochoir process, the latter involving the application of watercolour or gouache pigments to the prints through the medium of stencils.

The prints, on vélin Lafuma de Voiron art paper, were pulled on a hand press by Aimé Jourde and coloured by Richard. The suite was limited to 1110 numbered copies.

Madrigaux is widely considered to be amongst the finest livre d'artiste of the 20th century.
Raoul Dufy portraitBorn in Le Havre, Dufy was from a large family and had to start work at the age of 14. He studied art at night school, eventually receiving a grant enabling him to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Impressionistic at first, he became a convert to Fauvism under the influence of Matisse. He also collaborated with Braque, but soon developed the highly personal manner for which he became famous.

Dufy’s work is characterized by brightly coloured drawings suiting the glittering scenes of luxury and pleasure he favoured; the accessibility of his work lent itself to commercial advertising and widely copied as a result. Dufy died at Forcalquier in 1953 and was buried near Matisse in Cimiez, a suburb of the city of Nice.
