  • Artist - Edward Burne-Jones - Biography
Born in Birmingham in 1833, Burne-Jones was naturally gifted at drawing, taking special classes aged just 15. While studying at Oxford he met William Morris who would become a lifelong friend and collaborator. Influenced by Ruskin, he found a mentor in Dante Rossetti; though Burne-Jones’ early work shows similarity to the former’s style, Rossetti soon avowed that he had nothing more to teach him. In 1861 Morris founded a decorating firm with Burne-Jones as one of the directors, making designs for tapestries and stained glass windows. He died on 17 June 1898. Six days later, at the intervention of the Prince of Wales, a memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey. It was the first time an artist had been so honoured.
