  • Artist - Emil Maetzel - Biography
    Emil Maetzel was born in Cuxhaven in 1877. From 1900 he studied architecture, his career involving design of Hamburg Central Station and the architectural movement ‘New Building’. His interest in graphic design, art and sculpture grew with his setting up his own studio in 1921. Co-founder of the artist association the Hamburg Secession, his work took on the styles of expressionism, expressive realism and new objectivity. In 1937, five of his woodcuts were removed as degenerate art from the Kunsthalle Hamburg . After the war he was appointed director of construction in Hamburg and from 1948 he was Second Chairman of the re-founded Hamburg Secession.
