Punch'ong. Forest

Originally made for the fermentation & storage of staples of the Korean diet, such as gochujang & kimchi, this is a striking example of an Onggi jar by one of Korea's finest living potters. Lee decorates his Onggi jars with the traditional Korean Punch'ŏng. A dark stoneware body is coated with white slip & decorated using various methods. This stunning Onggi jar first had a rough coat of white slip ladled over it, whilst still wet Lee used his hands to spread the slip and tools to incise the slip in expressive marks. Sometimes different coloured slips are flicked over the white surface, in a Jackson Pollack like way. A stiff bristled brush may be used to scratch into the semi dry surface of the pot. Forest, waterfall, mountains - nature is very much in evidence in Lee's beautiful pots.
