  • Artist - Felix Labisse - Biography
Born in 1905, Félix Labisse was a French painter, illustrator and designer, best known for his fantastical, erotic surrealist works. His pictures predominantly feature hybrid creatures, with animal heads and female bodies, produced with deep colour and often in graphic style. He was particularly influenced by the work of Belgian expressionist and surrealist James Ensor, whom he also met. Labisse generally divided his time between the Belgian coast and Paris, working there from 1927. In 1931 he began to design sets for the theatre, his surrealist style being highly sought after. By 1966 he had been elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts and in 1973 he had a major retrospective in Rotterdam. Labisse died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1982.
