Denis Mitchell

Denis MichellDenis Mitchell was a British artist best known for his sculptures in wood, stone and sand-cast bronze. Born in Middlesex, 1912, Mitchell studied in Swansea in 1930, moving to St Ives soon after. A young friend of Dylan Thomas’, an interest in the arts had always been present but was peaked when the potter Bernard Leach recommended him as chief assistant to the sculptor Barbara Hepworth.

Mitchell worked for Hepworth from 1949 – ’59 and became one of the central modernist artists in the St Ives community. Renowned for his distinctive forms and highly polished bronzes, he also experimented with graphic designs, employing his keen eye for line and form in producing simple prints. Mitchell died in 1993.
