Gerhard von Ruckteschell PortraitGerhard von Ruckteschell was born in Hamburg in 1894. After the First World War he studied at the University of Music, Freiburg, whilst also serving as a carpenter’s apprentice. He received his master’s in 1927 and consequently opened his own workshop. He produced wood carvings and sculptures throughout his life, experimenting with Expressionist ideas during the beginning of his career.

His sculptures can be found throughout the town of Burg am Wald, just outside of Freiburg, where he was employed to help renovate the town. His early work was featured as part of an Expressionist exhibition in Holland during the 1980s.
