Ivon Hitchens PortraitIvon Hitchens was born in London in 1893, the son of the painter Alfred Hitchens. He is widely regarded as the outstanding English landscape painter of the 20th century. Immediately recognizable by its daring yet subtle use of colour and brushmark to evoke the spirit of place, his work is to be found in public and private collections throughout the world.

Hitchens studied art at the Royal Academy and was taught by John Singer Sargent and William Orpen. Later notable influences were the French Post-Impressionists Cezanne, Braque and Matisse. He was a member of the 7 & 5 Society and the London Group. He represented Britain at the 1956 Venice Biennale and created CBE in 1958. He died in 1976.
