Takashi Murakami PortraitBorn 1962, Murakami is a contemporary Japanese artist working in both ‘fine arts’ media, such as painting and sculpture, and the ‘low arts’, such as animation. From an early age he wished to work in the animation industry, becoming a keen follower of manga and anime. Originally graduating with a degree in Nihonga, a style of traditional painting, Murakami became increasingly disillusioned with the world of ‘high’ art.

Frustrated with the inaccessibility of the modern-day art market and the pretension of fine art, Murakami developed a style that embraced the popular culture of ‘otaku’ fandoms. As well as coining the term ‘superflat’, in reference to Japan’s history of two-dimensional art, he has collaborated with fashion brand Louis Vuitton and rapper Kanye West. In 2003 his work was determined to be the most desired in the world.
