Wilhelm Tegtmeier

Wilhelm Tegtmeier

Wilhelm Tegtmeier PortraitWilhelm Tegtmeier was born in Wuppertal, Germany, in 1895. After serving in the First World War he studied at the School of Applied Arts, Hamburg from 1918, whilst also studying Ancient Greek at the University of Hamburg. From 1923-24 he worked as an art teacher at the Kaiser Wilhelm Gymnasium in Hannover but gave up the position to work as a freelance artist. In 1936 he was appointed to the Nordic Art Academy, Bremen, (the school was founded under the National Socialist regime, intended to implement Nazi ideology within the arts), where he worked until 1945.

He was a keen sailor and after the war spent much of his time sailing in the North Sea; his later work was inspired by his time at sea.
