  • Artist - George Chapman - Biography
Chapman was born in London and studied art in Gravesend before attending the RCA and the Slade School. Influenced by Sickert and the Euston Road School of painters, in 1951 he moved to Great Bardfield where he became part of the artistic community alongside Edward Bawden and Michael Rothenstein. The following year he visited Wales for the first time and the country became a lifelong inspiration.

Chapman won the Gold Medal for painting at the Royal Eisteddfod of Wales in 1957 but became disillusioned and produced almost no work for twelve years from 1969. Revival of interest in Chapman’s work culminated in a major retrospective here at Goldmark Gallery in 1992, and his work is well represented in public collections including the National Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
