JMW Turner PortraitJ. M. W. Turner – Artist Profile “] [sws_2_column rightmargin=”0px”] For many people Turner is the most creative genius in the history of British art particularly with regard to his landscapes and topographical views. Born in 1775, he was viewed as a controversial figure in the world of English Romantic art in his lifetime being a significant proponent of the importance of landscape painting over its rival ‘history’ painting.

Around the turn of the years 1824-25 he agreed with the print-publisher Charles Heath to produce an ambitious series of drawings and watercolours after which engravings would be issued under the title Picturesque Views in England and Wales. Despite its commercial failure the series was hugely successful from an artistic point of view, and has been regarded as one of the greatest series of prints ever produced
