Aubrey Beardsley

Aubrey Beardsley portraitBeardsley was born in Brighton into a poor family in 1872. Initially working as a clerk in London, he had short stories published while unemployed through illness and developed a distinctive style of draftsmanship. By 1894 Beardsley was appointed art editor of the Yellow Book and, having attracted outrage from press and public for his illustrations to Wilde’s Salome, met a similar response with the publication.

A year later, with Wilde’s arrest, Beardsley was sacked from the Yellow Book and fled to France. Returning to England, he found a new publisher and launched The Savoy in 1896, containing an extract from Beardsley’s erotic unfinished masterpiece, Under the Hill. Though he died from tuberculosis at the desperately young age of 26 in 1898, his work was hugely influential on the aesthetics of the early 20th century.
