Upon graduation, Rae earned a travel scholarship to go and paint in France and Spain. The experience, alongside a childhood and student days spent in the Highlands, greatly influenced her art, with many of her abstract pieces drawing on landscapes.

Rae has also lectured in art, holding a position at the Glasgow School of Art from 1975 – 1996, and was elected as a Royal Scottish Academician and Royal Academician in 1992 and 1996 respectively. Her art is characterized by a vivid use of colour and her work is held in major institutions, including the British Museum and the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh.
