Nauen was one of the original members of Die Brücke, (the Bridge), which was founded in 1905 by Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirschner, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

Nauen participated in most of the great exhibitions of the German Expressionists, including the 1907 exhibition of the Berlin Secession. Condemned by the Nazi's in the 1938 exhibition of Degenerate Art Nauen's work is deeply spiritual and extremely intense.
Heinrich Nauen PortraitHeinrich Nauen is one of the most important representatives of " Rheinische Expressionismus ". His rich work includes paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints, as well as monumental wall paintings, mosaics and craftsmanship.

He came from a Krefeld baker's family. His parents were Heinrich Franz Nauen and Adelgunde Louise b. Moors. Early on he developed a desire to become a painter.

In 1898 he was admitted to the Düsseldorf Academy of Art , where he taught from 1921 to 1937 as a professor. After the temporary attendance of a private art school in Munich (1899), he continued his studies at the Kunstakademie in Stuttgart from 1900 to 1902.
