Gwyneth Johnstone was the daughter of celebrated artist Augustus John and was a gifted artist in her own right.

She studied initially at the Slade School in London, then in Paris, her career was long and varied and her work is held in many public collections. Her obituary in the Independent described her as a "painter whose dreamlike pastoral idylls eschewed fashionability".
