    John Piper was born at Epsom in Surrey, 1903. Following his father’s wishes, he spent 5 years in the family law firm before pursuing art, firstly at Richmond School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art. In the 1930s Piper exhibited abstract pictures and constructions, then reverted to creating landscape and architectural images, developing the picturesque style that features in his later work.

    Piper experimented with printmaking from as early as 1923 when he produced four wood engravings. Piper’s prints embody his love of Britain through their depiction of its art, architecture and topography. However frequently underpinning their design, as the artist Rigby Graham has indicated, are the elements of collage, construction and assemblage that featured in his modernist work of the early 1930s.

    Signed watercolour wash, with wax crayon, pastel and pen and ink on paper.
    Exhibited at Bohun Gallery and Marlborough Fine Art.

    Exhibited at Marlborough for the John Piper - Recent Works exhibition in 1975.
    Exhibited at the John Piper and the Church exhibition at the Bohun Gallery. The exhibition was a celebration of HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee by The Friends of Dorchester Abbey. Illustrated in the exhibition catalogue - page 42.

    Piper produced a few paintings of Chichester Cathedral, this view from the Deanery is very close to that used for a later reproduction print.
    Piper had been commissioned by Chichester in the 1960s to make a mural for the back of the altar, to which he said that it was the most frightening commission he had ever done.

    From this commission it is clear to see that he had a special relationship with Chichester and visited time again to paint the cathedral.
