This etching from Manzu's suite Virgil's Georgics represents one of the most extraordinary moments of the artist's etching production.

This precious suite entered the GAM collection in 1956, thanks to the exceptional bequest of Alberto Rossi - a refined collector, mostly recognized for his interest in both national and international contemporary graphic production.

Laid down on linen.
Giacomo Manzu PortraitManzù was largely self-taught as an artist. He was strongly influenced by Donatello and the primitivism of early Christian art.

Settling in Milan in 1930 his early sculpture was dominated by Biblical subject matter. Carrà presented Manzù's first one-man show, where the influence of Medardo Rosso was apparent. Along with Marini and Carrà he was awarded a professorship at the Brera Academy in 1940, shortly before his Crucifixion reliefs were condemned by the Church and the Fascist government.

Manzù retreated to Clusone near Bergamo until the end of the war, after which he established himself as a sculptor of religious imagery, being commissioned to create a set of doors for St Peter's which were completed in 1964. He has achieved international critical acclaim for the part he played in the rebirth of Italian sculpture.
