Collection: Hans Tisdall 1910 - 1997 Follow artist
Hans Tisdall studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, coming to live in London in 1930. He paralleled his work as a muralist with textile design and with teaching at Central (1941-2 and 1947-62). He also did many book jackets and illustrations, noted for their typography. German by origin, once resident in England Tisdall developed his love of the sea and boats and discovered Hastings. He made frequent trips there, although his rather bizarre School Print bears little resemblance to the tall black huts of the Sussex fishermen. His fanciful, vaguely surrealistic image left much for the children to puzzle out. (1990, Hans Tisdall: Paintings 1960-90 (exhibition catalogue), Albermarle Gallery, London).
