On his death at the front in early June 1915, Henri Gaudier’s entire artistic output comprised more than two thousand drawings, eighty or more sculptures, and numerous notebooks and sketchbooks.

He was not yet twenty-four years old; the output of a lifetime had been condensed into five short years. His death terminated the further prospect of an innovation and enterprise at that time unequalled anywhere in the world.
