Robert Köpke (1893 -1968) was a German painter and graphic artist At the beginning of the First World War , he was drafted into military service and came to France after recruiting to the Western Front. Around 1920 Koepke met the poet and painter Karl Lorenz (1888-1961), who reproduced Köpke’s expressionist woodcuts in his publications.
Köpke kept meticulous notes during the war and also when exploring the countryside to work in the natural environment. A versatile artist, he was prolific in his botanical paintings, poster designs as well as commissioned art work for furniture, lamps, wallpaper and fabrics.
