Sometimes the word 'gallery' simply isn't enough. Yes, it's the core of a business dedicated to the best in painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. But here the books turn into paintings, the paintings turn into films. Watch our short film to find out a bit more about us and what we do.
Alices Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass,
An ultimate tribute came to an elderly Tenniel as he was honoured as a living national treasure and for his public service was knighted in 1893 by Queen Victoria. The first such honour ever bequeathed on an illustrator or cartoonist, his fellows saw his knighting as an important step in raising what had been considered a fairly lowly profession to an unprecedented level of respectability.
A full set of 91 wood engraved and 1 electrotype illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass.
Printed for the first time from the original blocks in 1988 after the blocks were found after being lost.
From the edition of 250.
In 1863, Lewis Carroll decided to employ a professional artist to visualise Alice's journey through Wonderland.
He hired John Tenniel, who was a well known artist at Punch! at the time.
Tenniel approached the Dalziel brothers, who assisted with the engraving of his designs onto box wood.
In October 1864, when the printing and publishing began for the books, Carroll decided to make metal replicas of the woodblocks to print from, as it was thought that the woodblocks would not survive the industrial-scale printing.
This was a good decision in the end, as no one predicted just how popular Alice would be.
The woodblocks were put away for safe keeping, and exactly what happened to the original blocks in the decades between their casting and eventual rediscovery remains a mystery.
Of the original 92 woodblocks, only one has been lost: Alice and the Dodo, the sole illustration of this later set to have been produced from the surviving electrotype copy.
In 1985 the original wood engraved blocks were found in deed boxes belonging to Macmillan, Carroll’s publishers, secured there by the publishing house’s post-war Art Director (whose name, by yet more bizarre coincidence, was also Lewis Carroll). Jonathan Stephenson of the renowned Rocket Press was awarded the prestigious task of printing 250 sets from them, the very first time that they had ever been used besides their initial proofing. The edition would be distributed worldwide and no further sets commissioned.
Tenniel’s greatest and most enduring achievement, the Rocket Press’ reproduction of these illustrations from the original woodblocks restores a richness and clarity unachievable in the electrotype prints. Having stood the ultimate test of time, ranking even to this day among the world’s best-known children’s images, they will no doubt continue to delight for generations to come.
