Our new documentary on the life and art of Anthony Gross, over 4 years in the making, nears completion. In anticipation of this weekend's great exhibition opening, book launch and film preview, we thought we would share a special advance (almost finished!) version with you.
Anthony Gross CBE RA (1905-1984) led a life of adventure and dashing romance. Better known as the master etcher who honed his line in the shantytowns of Paris, his pioneering work in animation propelled him briefly to the forefront of British film. Our most prolific Official War Artist, his service brought him from North Africa to the Near East, from the jungles of Burma to the beaches of D-Day, documented across several hundred watercolours.
Then, with the war behind him, Gross spent thirty years living and painting amid the extraordinary vistas of the Lot Valley in southern France. At a time when Abstract Expressionism was taking the world by storm, Gross discovered a style of abstraction all his own – one that harked back to his father’s cartography shop, but was tied inextricably to the shapes and rhythms of the natural world around him.
This is his incredible story...
