Anthony Gross was born in London in 1905 and studied painting and engraving at the Slade. Later he studied in Paris and Madrid and spent much of his time in France. In 1940 Gross evacuated his family on one of the last ships to leave Bordeaux. He was appointed an Official War Artist and landed in Normandy with the Allied troops on D-Day, holding his materials aloft as he waded ashore.
Gross was very prolific, producing more than 500 pictures during the War. Post-war, he stayed in France before finally buying a house in the south-west in 1955 and settled into a pattern of living and working there during the summer but returning to London each winter. In 1980 he was elected an R.A. Gross died in 1984.

In this latest Goldmark book, esteemed art critic and writer Julian Freeman re-evaluates the long neglected legacy of Anthony Gross. This new text by Freeman, with contributions by Martin Salisbury and Max Waterhouse, examines the breadth of Gross' career, from early pre-war painting, animation and etching to his years as the most prolific War Artist, and his final years painting in and around the French village of Le Boulvé. The book is full of photographs and illustrations of Gross' work.
Anthony Gross CBE RA (1905-1984) led a life of adventure and dashing romance. Better known as the master etcher who honed his line in the shantytowns of Paris, his pioneering work in animation propelled him briefly to the forefront of British film. Our most prolific Official War Artist, his service brought him from North Africa to the Near East, from the jungles of Burma to the beaches of D-Day, documented across several hundred watercolours. Then, with the war behind him, Gross spent thirty years living and painting amid the extraordinary vistas of the Lot Valley in southern France.
At a time when Abstract Expressionism was taking the world by storm, Gross discovered a style of abstraction all his own – one that harked back to his father’s cartography shop, but was tied inextricably to the shapes and rhythms of the natural world around him.
