Maenads Dancing, c.1920s

Oil on canvas, signed bottom left. A striking oil from Hale's formative years imbued with the contemporary influences of London's avant-garde and the Bloomsbury Group. Probably executed after her return from Étaples in the early 1920's. Hale decamped to "cosmopolitan, down-and-out Fitzrovia – a Paris in London, ‘the city of artists, where I had always intended to live’, haunted by Sickert, Kramer, Bomberg, Meninsky, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant." Waterhouse, Goldmark, 2022

Kathleen Hale OBE (24 May 1898 – 26 January 2000) was a British artist, illustrator, and children's author. She is best remembered for her series of books about Orlando the Marmalade Cat. Kathleen Hale was born in Lanarkshire, but brought up in Manchester. Her father died when she was five and her mother decided to take over his job as travelling salesman for Chappell's pianos.

From 1903 to 1905 she lived at the vicarage in Shelf, West Yorkshire and developed her interest in plants, flowers and drawing there. Kathleen Hale moved to London in 1917, intending to make a life for herself as an artist. She worked for some time as Augustus John's secretary while she developed a wide circle of friends, including Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. During the 1920s she earned a living as an illustrator, accepting commissions for book jackets, posters and illustrations for children's books, as well as selling her own drawings. She also attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts.

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.

There is no other gallery like Goldmark. I'm always amazed at both the stock they hold and their ability to regularly source really quite special pieces of art. That, with their friendly, knowledgeable & utterly unpretentious style makes them a delight to visit & to buy from.

Their delivery service is 100% reliable and the breadth of work displayed on their website pretty amazing. Above all, unlike other such dealers, I have never been under any pressure to buy. I recommend you give them a try.

We first visited Goldmark approximately 6 years ago and immediately liked the informality compared to previous gallery experiences. It’s a great place to start or build on your collection. Everyone at Goldmark is very friendly, knowledgeable and will give you as much or as little time as you wish.
