Kemp Town, 1939
Piper experimented with printmaking from as early as 1923 when he produced four wood engravings. Piper’s prints embody his love of Britain through their depiction of its art, architecture and topography. However frequently underpinning their design, as the artist Rigby Graham has indicated, are the elements of collage, construction and assemblage that featured in his modernist work of the early 1930s.
Notes by the artist: Kemp Town.
The double curve of Regency buildings shown here forms part of the beautiful spacious layout of Kemp Town. Wide, elaborate curved blocks of houses here sweep away from the sea front, enclosing gardens between them. Balconies and windows are finely managed in the designs, so as to enhance the total effect of the curves. A panoramic view of the buildings on the front at Kemp Town, contemporary with these Regency development proposals, may be seen in the Royal Pavilion.
