Sometimes the word 'gallery' simply isn't enough. Yes, it's the core of a business dedicated to the best in painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. But here the books turn into paintings, the paintings turn into films. Watch our short film to find out a bit more about us and what we do.
West Front, Durham, 1976
Painter, illustrator, artist in collage and murals, draughtsman and teacher, born in Scarborough, Yorkshire. He studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford, under Albert Rutherston, 1934–35, and at the Slade under Randolph Schwabe. During World War II he participated in the Pilgrim Trust Recording Britain project and was an Official War Artist. From 1959 to 1980 he was Professor of Fine Arts, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He became a member of the Society of Mural Painters in 1943, taught mural painting at the Royal College of Art for 10 years from 1948, and received a Ford Foundation Grant to visit America in 1959. In 1951 he painted murals for the Lion and Unicorn Pavilion at the Festival of Britain. Tate, Victoria & Albert Museum and WAC are among many public owners of his work.
Signed, numbered, dated original screenprint.
From the edition of 75.
Dedicated for Alex & Frances, March 1990.
Printed by the artist and Audrey Dalby at the Design School, Department of Fine Art, University of Newcastle upon Tyne and published by the artist.
The artist writes that he was 'enormously impressed by the visual aspect of the West Front at Durham Cathedral', being especially impressed by 'its splendour when the sun moved infinitesimal stages onto the West Front'. The print was made after specially prepared photographs of the similarly entitled construction made in 1974.
