Landscape with Balloon, 1918
Best known for his extraordinary number of self-portraits, Beckmann received great critical acclaim throughout the years of the Weimar Republic, but his art was denounced by the Nazis and, upon Hitler’s ascension to power, rejected as degenerate art. Originally failing to gain a visa to the U.S. and painting in a studio in Amsterdam, Beckmann eventually emigrated after the war to New York. He died there in 1950.
A third landscape in the suite, similarly open with a generally cleaner plate than domestic or internal scenes. The boulevard is in Frankfurt, possibly the Darmstrasse in the Sachsenhausen section of the city and close to where Beckmann had his studio. As with the other landscapes, the image is serene: a balloon floats above the setting sun as clouds waft by above the nearby trees. The artist’s proof of this print was dedicated to Julius Meier-Graefe, the art historian, critic, novelist and publisher who produced the Gesichter portfolio through the house he founded himself, Marées Gesellschaft, in 1917.
