Le Chapeau Epingle, 1921
Having featured in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, Renoir’s art came to public notice. Later that year his work was shown by the famous dealer Durand-Ruel in London and his paintings have since become iconic images of the Impressionistic movement, though he was not bound by the genre. From 1907 Renoir lived on his coastal farm at Cagnes-sur-Mer where he died twelve years later.
Originally created c.1894 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir for Geffroy's La Vie Aristique Vol. 3.
This is a second edition impression for Georges Rivière's Renoir et ses Amis, published in Paris in 1921.
Depicting a serene view of two young women posing for their portrait, this extremely delicate work expresses the beauty and elegance of Renoir's portraiture. Noted by Stella, "As the subtitle explains, Berthe Morisot's daughter, Julie Manet, and her cousin are the models for this subject.
