George Peter Lanyon (8 February 1918 – 31 August 1964) was a British painter of landscapes leaning heavily towards abstraction. Lanyon was one of the most important artists to emerge in post-war Britain. Despite his early death at the age of forty-six he achieved a body of work that is amongst the most original and important reappraisals of modernism in painting to be found anywhere. Combining abstract values with radical ideas about landscape and the figure, Lanyon navigated a course from Constructivism through Abstract Expressionism to a style close to Pop.

    About the Work

Signed and dated mixed media on paper.
    Including oil, pencil, and crayon.

Illustrated in 'Wartime Abstracts: The Paintings of Peter Lanyon' page.76.

    With exemplary provenance.
The previous owner’s grandfather shared a studio with Lanyon and has been in the family’s possession ever since.
Martin Lanyon (son of Peter Lanyon and holder of the Estate) wrote to the previous owner saying how important he thought the piece to be:

I think your painting is important because of the link to your grandfather and because we know exactly where it was painted from (the upstairs studio that your grandfather & my father shared in Foggia) and also when (see attached evidence for the exact date). There is also a drawing done (at the same time) & from the same viewpoint. The whereabouts of this drawing is not known. - Martin Lanyon

There is also a letter, which is in the Lanyon Archive between Lanyon and his future wife (Shelia Lanyon) about his painting in Foggia (see image).
Written on the 6th September 1945:

    Darling,
I have been painting and drawing again. I flew here to Foggia on Wednesday and since then have been painting. I have just finished one...

    What our customers say
    Wendy

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

    Paul

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.

    Terry

Just received my Kang-hyo Lee teacup. In perfect condition. I’m so happy with it and I think the international service offered by Goldmark is superb. The staff are so kind and extremely efficient and professional.

There is no other gallery like Goldmark. I'm always amazed at both the stock they hold and their ability to regularly source really quite special pieces of art. That, with their friendly, knowledgeable & utterly unpretentious style makes them a delight to visit & to buy from.

    Christine

Their delivery service is 100% reliable and the breadth of work displayed on their website pretty amazing. Above all, unlike other such dealers, I have never been under any pressure to buy. I recommend you give them a try.

    Vanessa

We first visited Goldmark approximately 6 years ago and immediately liked the informality compared to previous gallery experiences. It’s a great place to start or build on your collection. Everyone at Goldmark is very friendly, knowledgeable and will give you as much or as little time as you wish.

    Sharon

Great pots, exquisitely displayed, expertly packed and shipped all over the world! The storytelling about potters and their methods has been extremely helpful, Goldmark is fabulous!

    Mark

Always friendly and helpful staff with an amazing ever changing gallery of wonderful art and studio pottery! Would highly recommend a visit!

    Philip

We have bought prints and pots from Goldmark over many years and our house is the richer for the collections we have built up. The framing and delivery service are faultless.
