Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881 and was to become the most famous, versatile, prolific and influential artist of the 20th Century. The son of a painting and drawing master, he was remarkably precocious, mastering academic draughtsmanship when still a child. By the 1920s Picasso had established himself as a world famous painter and his reputation and status continued to grow.

It is our good fortune that Picasso had such a great love of printmaking. By the time he died in 1973 he had produced a substantial body of original etchings, lithographs and linocuts, which rank with the greatest prints of the 20th Century. While the ownership of an original painting is, for the majority of us, out of the question, his original prints made in small editions remain relatively accessible.

About the Work
Original lithograph on Arches paper after Pablo Picasso.

From the portfolio Portraits Imaginaire (Imaginary Portraits).

In January 1969, at the age of 87, Picasso received a shipment of painting supplies packed with sheets of brown corrugated cardboard. Inspired by these 'blank canvases' Picasso set about painting a series of imaginary portraits over the next four months in simple brilliant colours, many referring back to Picasso’s own earlier images: Balzac, Shakespeare and the dandies of 17th century Holland. Interested in having these works interpreted through another medium Picasso contacted the renowned lithographer Marcel Salinas; there followed a year of close collaboration culminating in this suite of twenty nine lithographs. Picasso supervised the project closely printing only taking place when each proof had received his 'bon à tirer' (good to pull).

Each print is hand numbered and signed in the plate as it appears on the original gouache.

The edition of 500 consisted of 250 for distribution in France and 250 for the rest of the world. This image is from the French edition, numbered F81/250 in pencil bottom left.

There is no other gallery like Goldmark. I'm always amazed at both the stock they hold and their ability to regularly source really quite special pieces of art. That, with their friendly, knowledgeable & utterly unpretentious style makes them a delight to visit & to buy from.

Their delivery service is 100% reliable and the breadth of work displayed on their website pretty amazing. Above all, unlike other such dealers, I have never been under any pressure to buy. I recommend you give them a try.

We first visited Goldmark approximately 6 years ago and immediately liked the informality compared to previous gallery experiences. It’s a great place to start or build on your collection. Everyone at Goldmark is very friendly, knowledgeable and will give you as much or as little time as you wish.

Their exhibitions are always prepared with great care, with videos and catalogs accompanying the shows. I have not been able to visit the gallery in person but all the Goldmark team is splendid and highly professional, which makes the virtual shopping a great experience.
