Post Early, 1934
In his work Sutherland developed an interest in natural forms of growth such as tree roots and thorn bushes which he often depicted in close-up or from foreshortened viewpoints. These organic growth formations, which remained central to Sutherland’s work throughout his career, often appeared menacing or threatening with their hints of human or animal like characteristics.
From the 1930s until the 1960s the Post Office ran its annual 'Post early' campaign, encouraging people to send their letters and parcels as early as possible to avoid a rush in the week leading up to Christmas. They commissioned many of the periods most innovative and leading graphic designers/artists to produce works. Graham Sutherland was the designer of the first poster in 1934. He produced two of Postmen on their rounds and this one is the rarer of the two.
