Resurrection, 1918
Best known for his extraordinary number of self-portraits, Beckmann received great critical acclaim throughout the years of the Weimar Republic, but his art was denounced by the Nazis and, upon Hitler’s ascension to power, rejected as degenerate art. Originally failing to gain a visa to the U.S. and painting in a studio in Amsterdam, Beckmann eventually emigrated after the war to New York. He died there in 1950.
Following on from his depiction of Christ’s removal from the crucifix, Beckmann offers a version of the Resurrection story, each phase contained within the same image. ‘Resurrection’’s style and composition is evidence that Beckmann, though primarily thought of as a German Expressionist, could also elude the label and often produced work of an almost unique fashion. This print seems almost surreal in its play with perspective, its distorted and contorted bodies and its bizarre anachronism too: in the foreground, towards the lower left-hand corner, Beckmann has included a portrait of Fridel Battenburg at the fore, his wife Minna Tube behind her in profile, Beckmann hidden behind her, Ugi Battenburg behind him, and the eyes and forehead of a young Peter Beckmann peering over a ledge beside his parents, incorporating both the metaphorical Gesicht of Christ’s resurrection and the literal Gesichter of his friends and family.
