Anglo-Welsh artist Frank Brangwyn was actually born in Bruges (1867), but his family returned to London when he was eight years old. He took to sketching regularly in his early teens and, aged 18, Brangwyn exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time. During the 1890s he produced book illustrations, continuing to do this for the rest of his career.
In the 1900s Brangwyn began designing furniture, textiles, ceramics and other media. He was made an Official War artist in World War I, gaining repute through his posters, and was further recognised with an RA appointment (1919) and a knighthood (1941). Brangwyn was given a major retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy, the first time this honour had been accorded to a living artist.

Signed original lithograph.
Printed by Avenue Press, printed in a very small edition of 10 on Japon paper, The Avenue Press noted that this poster was very special because of the small number that were produced and the stone had been erased so that no further copies could be made.
De Bijser, who wrote on this piece in 1955 dated the work 1916.
Depicting refugees leaving a town destroyed during the war, with a swarm of people processing right. An eagle's head rises through the dark sky and the shape of the sword of Damocles points down at the struggling masses.
Although Brangwyn did not normally indulge in overt symbolism, perhaps he was suggesting that the eagle (Germany) considered itse;f all powerful, but that tragedy was only a hair's breath away.
