Rachel Ann Le Bas was a painter and printmaker known for her rural landscape views of the West Country and her directly observed street scenes in Paris and Brittany. Born in Surrey in 1923, at a young age she moved to Exmoor where she would live and work for the rest of her life. After WWII, she attended the City and Guilds of London Art School where she quickly became an adept etcher and engraver.
An elected member of the Royal Society for Painter-Etchers and Engravers (1960), the Art Workers Guild (1969), the New English Art Club (1972), and as Master of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen (1995-9), Le Bas was particularly respected as a printmaker. Her etched and engraved work joins oils and watercolours in major public collections including both the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Exeter Museum, and the Government Art Collection.
