Sometimes the word 'gallery' simply isn't enough. Yes, it's the core of a business dedicated to the best in painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. But here the books turn into paintings, the paintings turn into films. Watch our short film to find out a bit more about us and what we do.
Matta emigrated to the USA in 1938, where he stayed for the next ten years documenting the political anxiety in disturbed oil paintings. Though his name became more widely known, his ties to the Surrealists were severed following allegations that his affair with the wife of Arshile Gorky provoked his suicide. Expelled from the group, he lived between Europe and his homeland of South America, where he was a staunch defender of the country’s socialist movements. Matta died in 2002.
Signed and numbered original lithograph, with hand colouring in oil pastel by the artist.
From the Minded Mind suite, a series of six lithographs, printed in a very small edition of 20, this being number 1.
Only the first two edition numbers were hand coloured (the other set is in Minneapolis Institute of Art), making these extremely rare.
Printed by Kinji Akagawa and published by the Minneapolis School of Art.
Roberto Matta was a leading Surrealist painter, draftsman, and printmaker, whose work taps into the creative unconscious through the use of chance and automatic drawing techniques. Matta developed a visionary visual language of vaguely figurative biomorphic forms inhabiting an eerie dream-like world of violent conflict and deep anxiety. He described his own work as “the subconscious in its burning, liquid state; a conscious daytime substitution of the phenomenon of dreams.”
