Signed and dated driftwood sculpture.

A chunk of driftwood. The business end of a washing -up brush. 2bits of steel rod. And only the second pair of scissors to wash up in all my years of beach-combing. What to create?

By setting the driftwood body, (a larger version of what became the head of "Stiletto Parakeet") quite high, appropriate space allowed the scissors "beak" to read correctly. Even the sly crack in the wood suggests this mature character is having 40 winks. The once full head of hair has diminished to a tuft of grey and white, though one can deduce it was once worn with a centre parting.

Chatting with Gallery editor Max and his wife Emma one day, Emma suggested this piece had a professorial air. So "thank you Emma". Hey presto..........." The Professor " it is!
Sid Burnard portraitSid Burnard was born in Brighton in 1948. Introduced to the art of beachcombing by his Romany grandmother, Sid learnt to appreciate the beauty of nature from an early age. His time at Bristol Guild of Applied Arts gave him a profound understanding of visual arts and crafts and allowed him to put his personal vision into practice.

He is now based in Borth near Aberystwyth in Wales, where the flotsam and jetsam from the nearby sea is his only source of materials. Working with found objects, nothing is changed - simply introduced to one another. His driftwood pieces, usually birds, boats or mythical beasts, are full of his passion, integrity and wonderful humour.
